API Line Pipe
API Line Pipes are high-quality steel pipes created and manufactured with specifications from the American Petroleum Institute (API). API line pipes are generally used in the oil, gas, and water industries for transporting fluids at high pressures and extremes. API line pipes are necessary for the movement of hydrocarbons and other materials over long distances in a safe and efficient manner due to their exceptional long–term durability, corrosion resistance, and strength.
Key Features of API Line Pipes
- High Strength: API line pipes are produced with specifications for high-pressure environments in onshore and offshore pipelines.
- Corrosion Resistance: API line pipes have been designed with coatings and materials that resist rust and chemical damage for long-term performance.
- Versatile Usage: API line pipes can be used for transporting natural gas, crude oil, refined petroleum products, and water.
- API Specifications: API line pipes meet strict API 5L specifications for chemical composition, mechanical properties, and dimensions.
- Cost Saving: API line pipes provide superior performance capabilities and minimize the amount of downtime and maintenance costs associated with line service.

Grades and Specifications
API line pipes are manufactured in an available varying degrees for each application:
- Standard Line Pipe Grades:
- Grade A and Grade B: Appropriate for low-pressure applications.
- Commonly used in water and low-pressure oil pipelines.
- High-Strength Grades:
- API Line Pipes are available in grades X42, X46, X52, X56, X60, X65, X70, and X80
- These pipes are constructed to accommodate high-pressure applications and large line sizes. The higher grades of pipes are typically used where the application is critical, such as subsea pipelines and offshore drilling.
- Seam Types:
- Seamless Line Pipe: Possesses greater strength and can withstand high pressures, hence ideal for high-stress situations.
- Welded Line Pipe: Economical and suitable for transporting fluids long distances.
Applications of API Line Pipes
- Oil and Gas Industry:
API line pipes are used to transport crude oil, natural gas, and refined petroleum products. - Water Supply Systems:
API line pipes, including hydrant lines, are used to transport water for municipal purposes, plant processes, and irrigation. - Pipeline Infrastructure:
API line pipes are critical to developing large–scale pipeline construction to transport products long distances, and in many cases, inter–continentally and underwater. - Chemical Transport:
API line pipes transport chemicals and other industrial fluids at high pressures to facilitate safe transportation.
Coatings and Surface Treatments
API line pipes are often coated and/or undergo surface treatment to enhance the durability and performance of the pipe:
- Fusion Bonded Epoxy (FBE) Coating: Has excellent corrosion and abrasion resistance.
- Polyethylene (PE) or Polypropylene (PP) Coating: Adds an additional layer of corrosion resistance to the surface of the pipe.
- Internal Coatings: Provide improved flow efficiency and help to reduce friction in liquid or gas transport.
- Galvanizing: Is a process where the API line pipe is coated with a layer of zinc for added corrosion resistance.
Benefits of API Line Pipes
- Dependable Performance: The pipes are manufactured to withstand maximum pressure as well as extreme temperatures
- Long Service Life: Resistant to corrosion and wear, reducing replacement and maintenance costs.
- Wide Range of Sizes and Grades: Custom–built for specific operational requirements.
- Eco-Friendly: Coatings and treatments help mitigate leakages to better safeguard the environment.
- Compliance with International Standards: Guarantees compatibility and reliability in pipeline projects around the world.
Why Choose API Line Pipes?
- Guaranteed Quality: API line pipes are manufactured to API 5L specifications to provide reliability in critical services.
- Customizable: Available in multiple diameters and thicknesses and lengths to meet project specifications.
- Used Worldwide: API line pipes are standard in producing onshore, offshore, and subsea pipeline projects around the world.
FAQ's
PSL1 (Product Specification Level 1) is the level of quality that is standard for API 5L pipes for use in most service conditions. PSL2 (Product Specification Level 2) has extra testing requirements, including more stringent chemical and mechanical properties, making it more suitable for highly demanding service environments including sour service applications. A PSL2 pipe will also have tighter tolerance levels for toughness and impact resistance
Seamless steel pipes are produced without a welded seam, which gives them enhanced structural strength and makes them suitable for use at high pressure and temperature. On the other hand, welded pipes are more economical to produce for lower-pressure applications, although they may have the weakest points where the weld exists.
Sour service pipe means that the pipe is suitable to handle a higher–than–normal concentration of hydrogen sulfide (H2S), which can cause corrosion and cracking. Sour service pipe would be used primarily in oil and gas exploration and extraction work where the presence of sour gas means that the pipes used must have a high resistance to sulfide stress cracking. Common grades of sour service pipe, such as API 5L SS75, SS95, and SS105, would be used in sour service applications.
